Transport for London

Sustainable development

TfLatlas roundel At TfL, we recognise the importance of making sustainability central to the way we work.

This means maximising the environmental, social and economic benefits of our operations, while minimising the negative impacts, as far as possible.

As a socially responsible organisation, our role is more than getting people from A to B quickly, safely and providing value for money. We also want to contribute to a better quality of life for Londoners, now and in the future. Our sustainable development framework helps us to identify and address sustainability issues.

We also are a founding signatory to the International Association of Public Transport's Charter on Sustainable Development, which means we are committed to incorporating sustainable development as an organisational objective.

What we're doing

Developing responsible procurement

We have a responsible procurement policy to promote fair employment practices. It provides us with opportunities to work with a range of suppliers and purchase low-carbon, resource-efficient goods and services that are responsibly sourced.

Reducing barriers to access

We are working with local communities to make public transport, walking and cycling more accessible, through initiatives such as our school travel plans scheme and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Ambassadors Programme.

Addressing climate change

We are delivering the Mayor's Climate Change Action Plan through initiatives such as TfL's Climate Change Fund. This will deliver, among other things, a trial of 56 hybrid buses to be purchased by May 2009. After 2012, all new buses entering the TfL fleet will be hybrid.

We are also working to ensure our services and buildings are adapted to changes in climate.

Promoting sustainable freight

We are helping road freight operators to adopt safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly practices through the Freight Operator Recognition Scheme, which offers operators benefits to help them benchmark their performance.

Building a sustainable network

We are ensuring new stations and refurbishments address sustainability, such as those on the London Underground Investment Programme, the East London line, DLR and Crossrail.

This includes reusing and recycling construction waste, providing step-free access for disabled passengers and providing facilities to support more sustainable travel habits, such as secure cycle storage.
