Step-free access
Benefits
Step-free access stations have lifts or ramps so that passengers don't have to use escalators or stairs.
As well as increasing accessibility for Tube passengers with disabilities, step-free access provides benefits for other passengers with reduced mobility, including:
- People with children
- People carrying heavy luggage or shopping
- Older people
- People who prefer to use lifts
Step-free access stations
There are currently 56 Tube stations with step-free access, and the number is growing.
Two stations have already become step-free this year, Roding Valley and Golders Green. Plans are underway to provide step-free access to 25 per cent of the Tube network by the end of 2010.
A number of other step-free schemes are included in our Business Plan for 2009/2010 - 2017/18 including major London interchanges such as Blackfriars, Farringdon, Victoria and Tottenham Court Road.
