Transport for London

Bus lanes

bus-lane-car London's bus network is one of the biggest in the world, with 8,000 buses, 700 bus routes, and over six million passenger journeys made every weekday.

Raising road user awareness of bus lane restrictions has resulted in clearer bus lanes and an improved and more reliable bus service. This has encouraged more people to travel by bus, with usage up by 40 per cent in the past five years. In turn, this has helped to reduce congestion on London's roads.

Road signing will clearly outline the times the bus lane is operational and which vehicles are permitted to use it within those times.

Drivers who drive, stop or park in bus lanes during operational hours, may be issued with a £120 penalty charge notice. There are however, a number of exceptions such as police and emergency service vehicles and taxis (in most cases).

Cyclists are also allowed to use bus lanes, and their usage has increased greatly.

Motorcycles will be permitted in bus lanes from 5 January 2009 during an 18-month trial. Find out more about motorcycles in bus lanes.
