About the red route

Night traffic passing The red route is a network of roads that carry a third of the city's traffic and are essential for the movement of traffic and public transport. These comprise mainly of major routes into and around London, and play a vital role in keeping London moving.

Transport for London are responsible for enforcing the red routes which include clearways, parking and loading bays, bus lanes, yellow box junctions and banned turns.

TfL is committed to ensuring that drivers understand the rules rather than being issued a Penalty Charge Notice

TfL are not responsible for parking on single or double yellow lines, parking tickets issued in pay and display parking bays or on metered bays. These are managed by the 33 London boroughs. Please contact the relevant issuing borough if you receive a penalty charge notice for any of these.

Drivers misunderstanding or ignoring road signs, driving in a bus lane or parking in loading bays can create congestion or have safety implications for fellow road users.

Income from traffic enforcement and Congestion Charging goes towards improving London's roads and traffic control.
