RideLondon 2024

The annual cycling event, Ford RideLondon 2024, is back in London and Essex on Sunday 26 May 2024. There are also cycling events in Essex on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May 2024.

Road closures

There will be extensive road closures in central London, east London, and Essex between 00:01 and 21:00 on Sunday 26 May.

  • Vehicles will only be able to cross the route at designated vehicle crossing points
  • People walking will be able to cross on foot at designated pedestrian crossing points
  • You cannot cycle on closed roads unless you are taking part in the event
  • Closed roads will be reopened once it is safe to do so

Travelling in London

  • Avoid driving in the areas around the event if possible
  • Tube and rail will be the best ways to get around on Sunday 26 May
  • There are planned closures on the District line, Piccadilly line and London Overground on the day of the event
  • Driving and buses will be significantly affected by road closures for the event. There will be delays around the event, particularly on the A12 around the Blackwall Tunnel, A13 and A406
  • Cycling in the areas where the event is taking place will be affected by the road closures - you will not be able to ride on closed roads if you are not taking part
  • At weekends, cycles can be taken on all London Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR services but there are restrictions on where they can be taken on the Tube. Check where and when you can take cycles on public transport
  • Many destinations are within walking or cycling distance of national rail termini stations
  • Use our walking and cycling maps to plan your journey

Plan ahead, allow more time for your journey and check before you travel.

Closed bridges

These bridges will be closed to traffic. Alternative crossings in central London, and the Blackwall Tunnel, will be busier than normal and restrictions on vehicles may apply. If you need to cross the river, consider using crossings further away from Central London.

You will be able to walk across the bridges. If you are cycling, you will be able to dismount and walk across with your cycle.

River services and the IFS Cloud Cable Car are not affected by the event or bridge closures.

Tube and rail

Tube and rail will be the best way to travel around London on Sunday 26 May.

  • There are planned closures on the District line, Piccadilly line and London Overground on the day of the event
  • Check Tube and rail status updates to see how services are running
  • Cycles can be taken on all London Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR  services at weekends
  • There are  restrictions on where cycles can be taken on the Tube network. See Cycles on public transport

Buses

Buses will be significantly affected by road closures for the event. Where possible, use Tube and rail services.

  • Some bus journeys in central London, east London and Essex will take longer due to diversions or routes being stopped short of their destination and traffic delays around the event area
  • Plan ahead, check before you travel and allow more time for your journey
  • Services from Stratford and Canning Town bus stations will very busy, and there may be crowd control measures in place

The following buses will be diverted or stopped short of their destination on Sunday 26 May between 03:00 and 22:00. Traffic delays around the event area may also disrupt other services:

Driving

Driving in central London, east London, and Essex will be affected by road closures for the event. Closed roads and river crossings will be re-opened once it is safe to do so. Tube and rail will be the best ways to get around on Sunday 28 May.

  • Delays are expected around the event - the A12 around the Blackwall Tunnel, A13 and A406 will be extremely busy
  • Allow more time for your journey
  • Use alternative routes where possible

Cycling

Cycling in the areas where the event is taking place will be affected by the road closures. You will not be able to ride on closed roads and some Cycleways if you are not taking part.

  • You will be able to walk across closed roads with your cycle at designated, marshalled crossing places
  • You cannot cycle across closed bridges, but you will be able to walk across with your cycle
  • Cycles can be taken on all London Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR services at weekends
  • There are some restrictions on where cycles can be taken on the Tube network - see Cycles on public transport

Cycle routes affected

Cycleway 2

  • Eastbound: closed from 04:00 to approximately 12:00 from Bow Roundabout to Stratford
  • Westbound: open but stewards will be managing the crossings with the event route

Cycleway 3

  • Closed from 04:00 to approximately 19:30 in both directions between Constitution Hill and Tower Hill
  • Preparations for the event in the area on Saturday 25 May will not affect this cycle route

Cycleway 4

  • Closed in both directions from 04:00 to approximately 19:30 between Bermondsey Street and Tower Bridge Road

Walking

Pavements along the routes will remain open. You will be able to walk across closed river crossings.

Coaches

Check with your operator if you are travelling by coach in London on Sunday 26 May.

Coaches to and from Central London

  • Victoria Coach Station will be open as normal
  • Coach services to and from central London will operate broadly as normal but road closures will affect some operators

Coaches from Stratford, including services to Stansted Airport

  • Airport Bus Express A21 to Stansted Airport will have increased journey times
  • National Express A9 to Stansted Airport will have increased journey times
  • FLiXBUS services to and from Stratford will have increased journey times
  • National Express services to Victoria and East Anglia are diverted and will not serve Stratford all day

Other coaches to Stansted Airport

  • National Express A7 from Victoria to Stansted Airport will not serve Waterloo or Southwark between 03:00 and 19:40
  • National Express A8 from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport (via Bethnal Green, Mile End and Bow) will not operate between 03:00 and 19:40
  • National Express A5 and A6 services will operate as normal
